a · adaptSpike-frequency adaptation. Jumps on every spike and relaxes slowly; a high level means the cell has been firing a lot and is self-braking.
r̄ · rateLow-pass estimate of the cell's own firing rate. Sitting flat near the target set-point means the two slow homeostats are balanced.
